WELCOME TO TFTT’S FAMILY TREE ADOPTION
PROGRAM – FAQ’S
1) What does it mean to adopt a tree?
Adopting a tree is a meaningful way to take an active role in Lahaina’s reforestation and speed up Lahaina’s recovery. By adopting and nurturing a tree, you’re helping to grow vital food and shade trees for our Lahaina families impacted by the 2023 fires.
2) Is there a cost to adopt a tree?
No, there’s no official cost to adopt our Lahaina trees—your time and care are already priceless gifts! You may notice a slight increase in your water usage as you nurture the tree.
You can also support the program by donating supplies like compost, grow pots, or organic fertilizer. Need help? We can provide any supplies you require at no cost.
3) Can I adopt more than one tree?
Yes! You can adopt as many trees as you want, depending on the space, time, and care you can offer. The only limit is the availability of trees at the time. Every tree you support accelerates Lahaina’s reforestation efforts.
4) How long does the adoption process typically take?
The adoption process is quick and easy. Once you complete the application, your trees will be ready for pick-up immediately. It’s an easy way to start making a postive impact right away.
5) How long am I expected to care for the trees?
The length of time you care for the trees depends on the adoption level you choose. Some families may care for their trees for just a few months before passing them on, while others may keep their trees longer. You decide what works best for your commitment and capacity!
6) What happens if the tree I adopt doesn’t survive?
Don’t worry. Growing trees is a learning process. If your tree doesn’t survive, you can contact us to arrange for a replacement. Every effort you make contributes to Lahaina’s recovery, and we’ll continue growing new trees to support the cause.
7) What happens if I can’t care for the tree anymore?
That’s okay! Life happens, and we’re grateful for the care you’ve already provided. Simply contact us to arrange a convenient return of the tree. We’ll ensure it continues to grow and contribute to Lahaina’s recovery.
8) Are the trees native to Hawaii or specially selected for Lahaina’s recovery?
Yes! All our trees are based on the Lahaina Tree Recovery List provided by Treecovery Hawaii. This includes Native Hawaiian and canoe trees, as well as carefully chosen fruit trees like mangoes and papaya’s to support food sustainability and environmental restoration
9) Can the tree grow in a pot, or does it need to be planted in the ground?
Our Lahaina trees will remain in pots, and up-potted as needed, until the trees are ready for delivery to our Lahaina families. This approach ensures the trees are healthy, adaptable, and easy to move when they go to their new homes.
10) Will the trees provide food or shade for my family while we care for them?
Our tree adoption program is scaled to last 1-2 years…so some trees may fruit and flower and provide some shade during this time before they are delivered to our Lahaina families.
11) How does adopting a tree help Lahaina families?
When you adopt a tree, you’re actively participating in Lahaina’s recovery by growing new food and shade trees that will be delivered free to Lahaina families, offering them nourishment and shelter, and a living symbol of hope and renewal as they rebuild their homes and neighborhoods.
12) Can schools or organizations participate in adopting trees?
Yes! Schools, businesses, and other organizations are welcome to participate in the tree adoption program. This is a great opportunity to engage your community or team in a hands-on effort that directly contributes to Lahaina’s recovery.
13) Are there volunteer opportunities related to the tree adoption program?
Yes! We welcome volunteers who want to assist with tree care, potting workshops, and community events. Contact us if you’re interested in getting involved beyond adopting a tree.
14) What is the Long-Term Impact for growing new trees for Lahaina?
The trees you adopt will help rebuild Lahaina’s vibrant tree canopies, offering shade, wildlife habitat, and environmental restoration. Your adopted trees will heal the land and serve as a lasting legacy for future generations of the Lahaina community.
15) How will my participation be part of the larger recovery effort for Lahaina?
Every new tree we have growing for Lahaina…the faster we can accelerate Lahaina’s recovery. Every tree adds to the reforestation of Lahaina, restoring shade, improving air quality, and rebuilding a healthy ecosystem for the Lahaina community.
16) Who do I contact if I have questions or issues with my trees?
Contact the program coordinator for support at treesfortomorrowtoday@gmail.com.
17) Can I get help if my tree doesn’t seem healthy?
Absolutely! Reach out to our program coordinator for advice, troubleshooting, or any additional resources you need.
18) How can I share updates about my tree’s growth?
We would love to get your updates. Send us emails, photos, stories…and we would love to share them for our families on our website and social pages.
